Learning
as it should be –
Lifelong!
I also enjoy the winter lecture/lunch series — interesting speakers, topics, and good food, too!
Special Events
Gary Sullivan Memorial Lecture Series: Each winter, York County Senior College enlivens the doldrums with a series of three doubleheaders—one each in January, February and March. The lectures title commemorates the former University College director who played an important role in our founding.
- Field Trips: A field trip is scheduled each year. A committee makes all the arrangements for interesting sites to visit, transportation and entry fees. All you have to do is call to reserve a spot and to pay what is usually a modest fee.
The typical format: a welcoming reception from 9–9:30 PM, the first lecture from 9:30–11:30, lunch from 11:30–12:30, and the second lecture from 12:30–2:30 PM. The lectures are given on the campus of the Notre Dame Spiritual Center (formerly - Brothers of Christian Instruction) in Alfred, ME. The series program for each year is mailed and is posted on our website about Christmas time. Lecture subjects have varied from elder law to mountain climbing in Pakistan.
"Weather - or not?" - Winter can bring much snow and cause the unfortunate cancellation of one or more lecture days! Should any of our classes be canceled on account of weather, notice will be given on WMTV (Ch. 8), WCSH (Ch. 6) and WGME (Ch. 13). A message may also be heard on YCSC answering machine (282-4030).
Other recent trips have brought us to the Farnsworth Museum, the Maine State House, the Portsmouth Naval Base, the University of New England's Marine Center, the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The Fall 2018 Field Trip was a visit the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH, an internationally renowned museum specializing in American and European paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.
Spring Annual Meeting: Each year our York County Senior College activities culminate with a member luncheon at a conveniently located banquet hall. Included in the days program is the election of Officers and Council members for the upcoming year, and a presentation by a special guest speaker. The cost of this luncheon meeting is included in the annual dues. Non-members cannot be accomodated. Details of this year's event here.
